How to Open AAE Files on Windows 11

AAE files are sidecar files that are created by Apple’s Photos app on iOS devices when you edit a photo using the app. These files contain the changes made to the photo and are used to apply the same changes to the original photo.

Unfortunately, AAE files are not natively supported on Windows 11. However, there are a few ways you can view the changes made to the photo using AAE files on Windows 11:

  1. Use a third-party photo editor: You can use a third-party photo editor that supports AAE files to view and edit your photos on Windows 11. Some examples of photo editors that support AAE files are Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Affinity Photo.
  2. Convert AAE files to XMP: XMP is a metadata format that is used by many photo editors, including Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. You can convert AAE files to XMP using a free online converter like AAE to XMP Converter. Once you have converted the AAE file to XMP, you can import it into your photo editor and apply the changes to the original photo.
  3. Transfer photos to a Windows-compatible device: If you have access to an Apple device that supports AAE files, you can transfer your photos to the device and then transfer them to your Windows 11 PC. Once the photos are on your PC, you can use a third-party photo editor or convert the AAE files to XMP to view and edit them.
  4. Use a virtual machine: You can use a virtual machine like VirtualBox or VMware to run macOS on your Windows 11 PC. Once you have macOS running, you can use the Photos app to view and edit your photos and the associated AAE files.

Keep in mind that converting AAE files to XMP may not preserve all the changes made to the photo in the same way as viewing them in the Photos app on an Apple device.

How do I convert an AAE file to a JPEG in Windows?

Unfortunately, you cannot directly convert an AAE file to a JPEG file in Windows because AAE files do not contain the actual photo data. AAE files are only used by Apple’s Photos app to store the editing changes made to a photo. The actual photo data is stored separately in another file, such as a JPEG or HEIC file.

To convert a photo that has been edited using Apple’s Photos app to a JPEG file, you need to export the edited photo from the Photos app. Here are the steps to do it:

  1. Open the Photos app on your iOS device and select the photo that you want to export.
  2. Tap on the “Share” button in the bottom left corner.
  3. Select “Export” from the share menu.
  4. Choose the format you want to export the photo as. In this case, select “JPEG”.
  5. Choose the quality you want the photo to be exported as.
  6. Tap “Export [number] Photos”.
  7. Choose how you want to export the photo. You can send it to an app, save it to your Files app, or send it via AirDrop.

Once you have exported the edited photo as a JPEG file, you can transfer it to your Windows PC and view it using any photo viewer or editor that supports JPEG files.
